CURRICULUM, MULTILINGUALISM AND THE LAW

This volume is a result of international cooperation within the framework of the Tempus project Foreign Languages in the Field of Law funded by the European Commission. The project primarily focused on foreign language curriculum development for lawyers and its practical implementation. At the same time, it also sought to provide a wide theoretical background involving the current state of the fi eld of legal linguistics. The book brings together contributions on different topics of interest with the aim of promoting research and incorporation of legal linguistics into academic curricula at European universities. The papers focus on curriculum development and language education for lawyers, legal and linguistic aspects of multilingualism, language issues in EU law, analysis of legal discourse in different legal cultures, and forensic linguistics. The editors: Lelija Sočanac holds a PhD in linguistics. She is the coordinator of the Centre for Language and Law, Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb (Croatia). She currently directs the project on Legal and Linguistic Aspects of Multilingualism. Her research interests include legal linguistics, sociolinguistics, and contact linguistics. She teaches legal English and delivers courses on contact linguistics. Christopher Goddard has a background in law, language, and education. Based at the Riga Graduate School of Law, where he led the team that established a master’s programme in legal linguistics, he is currently completing doctoral studies in legal linguistics at the University of Lapland. In addition, through his UK-based company he supplies legal linguistic services including proofreading and editing legal texts in English; translating legal texts into English from Russian, French, and German; and delivering legal English courses. Ludger Kremer is Emeritus Professor at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) where he taught German Linguistics and Business Communication. He published a large number of books and articles on German and Dutch sociolinguistics, areal linguistics, language history, onomastics, and languages for special purposes.
