The importance of the subject of this book is in one way ever present to us through the media, and in another way still not yet well enough researched. For this reason the author decided to present a compete study of the Jewish presence in Croatia. It includes: historical conditions, the development of Jewish communities, their contribution to the social, economic and cultural development of the piaces where they settled, demographic changes with particularly attention to the Holocaust and postwar emigration.
The authenticity of the work is shown through the reconstruction of almost every Jewish communitv which has until now existed in Croatia with particiilar attention to the victims and those who died in or survived the Second World War.
The scholarly way in which this information is presented and elaborated is a step forward in the scientific approach to this problem.
In contrast to other works this book avoids ali politics, polemics and approximate assessment of the numbers who were killed in or survived the War but relies on Hsts of persons with name and family name. Because of the wide range of the Hsts this is a «book of the living» and not only of the dead as is so often the čaše in the study of Jewish communities.
