Od sjećanja na svoje djetinjstvo i godine kada je s ocem živio u logorima za „preodgoj kroz rad“ zbog očeve nepodobnosti, Ai Weiwei u svojim memoarima otvoreno govori o vlastitome putu, o svom životu i radu – od ranih studentskih dana preko velikih svjetskih izložbi pa do redovnog nadzora kineskih vlasti, što je kulminiralo njegovim višemjesečnim pritvorom 2011. – kao i o svojoj kontinuiranoj borbi za ljudska prava i za slobodu izražavanja na globalnoj razini. Autobiografija Ai Weiweija duboka je, na trenutke vrlo potresna i sjajno napisana knjiga o dvojici umjetnika kroz čije se živote prelama gotovo cijelo stoljeće kineske povijesti, a koja nam pruža izvanredne uvide za razumijevanje današnje Kine.
