Ovu zbirku eseja i govora proslavljenog švajcarskog pisca i univerzitetskog profesora Adolfa Muschga otvara esej o Velázquezovoj slici „Tkalje“, u kom Muschg već demonstrira sav svoj raskošni talenat za analizu, za neobične uvide koji intelektualno razgaljuju, za lucidne analogije kojima u osnovi leži neumoljiva erudicija. Sav taj esejički dar prožima i ostale eseje, tematski sasvim različite, bilo da govore o obrazovanju („Šta znači obrazovanje“), evropskom identitetu i budućnosti Evrope, našem odnosu prema životinjama („Kako životinja vidi životinje“), izazovima modernog društva i njegove ekonomije, toleranciji, kulturnom pamćenju, digitalnoj revoluciji itd. Muschg ima i izoštreno političko čulo pa su, i imajući u vidu kulturnu klimu zapadne Evrope, njegovi stavovi neobično smeli (naročito kada kritikuje želju nekih etničkih zajednica da monopolizuju status večnih žrtava i želju za privilegijama koje se iz toga priželjkuju, ali i postižu). Muschg je i izvrstan poznavalac nemačke klasične kulture, tako da njegovo upućivanje na Göthea, Humboldta ili Jacoba Burckhardta gotovo uvek podseti čitaoca na činjenicu da veliki autori iz prošlosti i dalje imaju da kažu nešto što je relevantno i za našu sadašnjost.
