U uvodnom dijelu pregledno su objašnjena načela opravdane i razumne uporabe antimikrobnih lijekova u životinja. Naglasak je na postavljanju točne dijagnoze i liječenju zasnovanom na rezultatima opisanih testova osjetljivosti. Autori savjetuju veterinare kliničare kako odabrati prikladan antimikrobni lijek, pravilno ga dozirati i navode koje su odgovornosti veterinara u pogledu zaštite zdravlja ljudi. Jednostavno su opisani mehanizmi bakterijske rezistencije na antimikrobne lijekove i načini prijenosa te rezistencije sa životinje na čovjeka. Središnji dio knjige bavi se probubakterijskom, protugljivičnom i protuvirusnom kemoterapijom. Sažeto su definirani veterinarsko-medicinski proizvodi, postupci registracije i navedene neophodne procjene koje prethode njihovom stavljanju u promet. Posebno poglavlje posvećeno je reziduama farmakološki aktivnih tvari u tkivima liječenih životinja i namirnicama životinjskog podrijetla. Težnja autora je da čitatelj shvati kako je primjena antimikrobnih lijekova vrlo odgovoran čin i stoga onaj koji ju provodi mora biti svjestan odnosa dobrobiti takve primjene i mogućeg rizika.
