On polako shvaća kako je sa svakim od tih likova nekako povezan i da su njegovi postupci upravo fatalni za njihove sudbine. Ryderove reminiscencije su eliptične i fragmentarne, a on sam se sakriva iza hladne maske profesionalnog umjetnika, koji se svojevoljno izdvojio od stvarnosti i bilo kakvog angažmana. Njegova artistička introspekcija vodi u sebičnost i izolaciju. Smješten u (ne)prepoznatljivi ambijent mračnih ili slabo osvijetljenih ulica, tijesnih salona i prostranih šuma, roman Bez utjehe priča je o svijetu protkanom bizarnim strahovima, snovima i noćnim morama, čiji su likovi osuđeni na amneziju. Slično Nabokovu, Kafki ili Thomasu Mannu, i Ishiguro vidi Srednju Europu kao simboličku paradigmu našeg vremena: to je svijet sastavljen od kolopleta apsurdnih snova i noćnih mora kojim plove bunovni likovi, nesposobni da komuniciraju s bliskim osobama, postajući žrtvama opasnog uvjerenja kako umjetnost može biti utočište od kaosa modernog života.
