Za vrijeme ljetnih praznika, u dječjem odmaralištu, upoznaju se dvije devetogodišnjakinje slične jedna drugoj kao jaje jajetu. Živahnija djevojčica glave pune kovrča zove se Luiza i dolazi iz Beča. Tiša djevojčica kose spletene u pletenice, po imenu Lota, dolazi iz Münchena. Prvotni šok postupno ustupa mjesto prijateljstvu, i dvije djevojčice zaključuju da su zacijelo blizanke. Kako bi otkrile što se dogodilo i zašto tek sada saznaju jedna za drugu, odlučuju se zamijeniti i živjeti svaka životom one druge, Luiza za promjenu s tatom, a Lota s mamom. Roditeljima, naravno, o zamjeni neće reći ni riječi. Premda su lukavice sve pomno isplanirale, na neke okolnosti ipak neće moći utjecati. „Prvo su se, naravno, vjenčali”, objasni Luiza po stoti put. „Onda su dobili dvije malene djevojčice. A kako se mama zove Luizalota, jedno su dijete nazvali Luiza, a drugo Lota. Pa to je baš jako lijepo! Sigurno su se tada još voljeli, zar ne?” „Sigurno!” kaže Lota. „Ali onda su se zacijelo posvađali. I otišli jedno od drugoga. A nas su prepolovili isto kao i mamino ime!”
