Najpotpuniji prikaz crkvenog graditeljstva 17. i 18. stoljeća u Istri istodobno predstavlja prvu znanstvenu valorizaciju napravljenu nakon temeljita istraživanja stotinjak spomenika i njihova svođenja u stilski i tipološki sustav. Egzaktna morfološka analiza omogućuje definiranje posebnosti crkvenoga graditeljstva toga područja, koje se razvija zavisno od sustava prijenosa informacija i transformacije talijanskih i srednjoeuropskih utjecaja. Građevne osobine temelj su raspoznavanja pojedinog tipa (Crkve s dva para donatorskih kapela, Crkve s patuljastim transeptom, Kasnopaladijevski tip, Pićansko-senjska skupina, Trobrodne nenadsvođene bazilike, Pavlinska crkva u Svetom Petru u Šumi i utjecaji njene arhitekture, Jednobrodnecrkve). Uz njih, autor razmatra osobitosti i sličnosti tlocrtnih rješenja i oblikovanja prostora, kao i njihov odnos definiran mjestom, veličinom i namjenom. Prepoznajući različite uzore, autor ih smješta u specifičan kontekst u kome su iskustva ograničena obzirom na regionalnu tradiciju i arhitektonsku baštinu. Cilj knjige je tumačenje sakralne arhitekture na istarskom poluotoku uširem prostornom, vremenskom i stilskom okviru. Vladimir Marković u obzir je uzeo uzorke i modele što su se širili iz nekoliko umjetničkih centara, te potom prihvatili u sredini koja nije bila zrela za inovacije, već je gotova rješenja umnožavala i oblikovala prema vlastitim mogućnostima.
