Iako je Franz Kafka jedan od najvećih, najčitanijih i najutjecajnijih autora dvadesetog stoljeća, i danas nam je nedokučiv, a njegov život i književna ostavština podložni su raznim interpretacijama. Ovi nam dnevnički zapisi daju uvid u pravog Kafku, čovjeka iza zagonetnog umjetnika, sa svim svojim osjećajima, strahovima, ambicijama i sanjarenjima. Pokrivajući razdoblje od 1909. do 1923, samo godinu dana prije autorove prerane smrti, Dnevnici nam otvaraju vrata Kafkina svijeta, nudeći nam iznimno zanimljive bilješke o kulturnome i društvenom životu u Pragu na početku dvadesetoga stoljeća. Ništa manje zanimljivi nisu Kafkini zapisi o osjećajima prema ocu kojeg je obožavao i s kojim, zbog ambicija koje je nastojao prenijeti na sina, nije uspio uspostaviti skladne odnose, prema svom prijatelju i biografu Maxu Brodu te prema ženi s kojom se nikad nije vjenčao. Na koncu, fascinantni su i zapisi vlastitih snova iza kojih stoji neprestan osjećaj krivnje i Kafkina borba da se dokaže kao pisac u svijetu vođenom mračnim i nepoznatim mehanizmima. Dnevnici nisu samo neophodni za razumijevanje Kafke i njegovih romana i pripovijedaka, već su čitak prikaz jednoga nevjerojatno burnog života koji nagoni na razmišljanje.
