Međunarodni odnosi akademska su disciplina u stanju paradigmatskog nereda. Njezine teorijske perspektive povremeno toliko divergiraju u svojim ontološkim, epistemološkim i metodološkim pristupima da se o njima ne može uvijek jasno govoriti kao o teorijskim modelima unutar jedne više ili manje samorazumljive paradigme. Kod realista dominiraju klasična pitanja države poput sigurnosti, opstanka, moći, oružanih sukoba i sl. Kod liberalnih mislilaca predmeti su promatranja češće institucionalni poredci, globalizacija, međunarodna suradnja, a kod npr. klasičnih marksista to su odnosi između ekonomskih klasa. Realizam se u svojim različitim verzijama tradicionalno smatra dominantnim teorijskim pristupom u međunarodnim odnosima. No pored prihvaćanja barem nekih “vječnih istina” realizma, autori su ove knjige svjesni promjenjivih krajobraza i povijesnih kretanja u sferi međunarodnih odnosa te potrebe za razvojem realističkog narativa izvan tematskih područja koja uobičajeno predstavljaju zonu udobnosti (comfort zone) realističkih mislilaca. Osnovni je stoga njezin cilj (lat. finis = cilj, granica) razviti pristup trima kritičnim izazovima globalnom upravljanju s kojima dosadašnji pristupi u realističkoj tradiciji teško izlaze na kraj i koji tradicionalno nisu smatrani objektima realizma, a to su globalno siromaštvo, pandemije i klimatske promjene.
