U devetnaestome stoljeću liječnici, isfrustirani i zagolicani u podjednakoj mjeri, nisu uspijevali jasno definirati histeriju. Kod žrtava tog poremećaja, među kojima su uglavnom, no ne i isključivo, bile žene, javljali su se neobični, promjenjivi simptomi, neobjašnjivi bilo kakvim fizičkim uzrokom. Te su pojave nadahnule mladog Sigmunda Freuda, a sama je psihoanaliza postala njegovim odgovorom na izazov s kojim su ga suočili njegovi histerični pacijenti. Premda je histerija ubrzo počela iščezavati iz ordinacija i dijagnostičkih priručnika, počela se javljati iznova, zakukuljena pod brojnim nazivima - granatni šok, poremećaji u hranjenju, sindrom višestruke ličnosti. Kao što pokazuje ova knjiga, subverzivna pitanja o ljudskom stanju, potaknuta slučajevima histerije prije više od stotinu godina, nisu zamrla među umjetnicima i kritičarima koji su se bavili pitanjima moći i nemoći, naravi želje i zadovoljenja, tjelesnih ograničenja seksualnih identiteta. Julia Borossa spisateljica je i predavačica, bavi se poviješću, kulturom i politikom psihoanalize.
