Struktura knjige uvelike je određena činjenicom da je riječ o pionirskom radu na području posve nove interdisciplinarne znanosti, poredbene povijesne standardologije, zasnovane na pretpostavci da je procesualnost standardizacije i ideja povezanih s njenim ostvarivanjem ono što je dovelo do konačnoga oblikovanja standardnih jezika te da je razumijevanje te procesualnosti u njezinoj punini zadatak svakoga tko želi shvatiti sadašnje stanje. U knjizi se analiziraju standardizacijski procesi, posebno na području Slavia romana, a posebno na području Slavia orthodoxa, pri čemu se iscrpno govori o utjecaju Katoličke i Pravoslavne crkve na te procese te o intelektualnim krugovima i idejama koje su njihovi pripadnici zagovarali. Posebno treba istaknuti autoričinu sposobnost da poveže poznavanje metoda poredbene povijesne sociolingvistike i temeljit pregled relevantne građe, osobito zato što je u nas danas vrlo malo znanstvenika koji su s podjednakim uvidom i razumijevanjem prilika, ideja i povijesnih okolnosti u stanju pisati o cijelom južnoslavenskom prostoru.
