Junak iz sjene prati usporedne priče dvojice junaka: Felícita Yanaquéa, pedantnog i milodušnog malog poduzetnika iz Piure suočenog s ucjenom, te Ismaela Carrere, uspješnog poslovnog čovjeka, vlasnika osiguravajuće tvrtke iz Lime, koji svojoj dvojici sinova, lijenčinama što mu priželjkuju smrt, smišlja neočekivanu osvetu. Obojica su na svoj način samozatajni buntovnici koji nastoje preuzeti kontrolu nad vlastitom sudbinom. Dok Ismael prkosi svim ustaljenim pravilima svog staleža, Felícito ostaje vjeran elementarnim načelima i suprotstavlja se ucjeni. Oni nisu utjelovljenje pravednika, no uspijevaju se uzdići iznad uskogrudnosti vlastitog okruženja kako bi živjeli u skladu sa svojim idealima i snovima. Na stranicama romana ponovno nailazimo na stare znance: narednika Litumu, don Rigoberta, donu Lucreciju i Fonchita, ovaj put smještene u Peru u gospodarskom procvatu. Knjiga odiše humorom, odlikuje se i elemntima melodramo, a Piura i Lima u njoj nisu samo fizički prostor, nego kraljevstva mašte nastanjena junacima velikog pisca Marija Vargasa Llose.
