U devet priča autor opisuje život u svome rodnom mjestu Runovići i Imotskoj krajini od prve polovine 20. stoljeća do danas. Autor je kao dječak napustio rodno mjesto i cijeli odrasli život proveo u Zagrebu. No njegove veze s rodnim krajem ostale su neraskidive te su stvorile snažan i bogat izvor nadahnuća za literarno pletivo slika i epizoda iz života stvarnih osoba tijekom više desetljeća. U knjizi se osobne i obiteljske povijesti prepliću s povijesnim događajima te se dramatičnost ratnih i političkih zbivanja uvijek ogleda na osobnoj razini pojedinih likova. Premda nalikuje autorovu životopisu, knjiga to zapravo nije, već - u najboljem značenju te riječi - »pripovijeda« priču o Runovićima i Runovićanima te kroz stvarne i izmišljene likove oživljuje sjećanja na stvarne osobe i povijesne događaje. Milan Puljiz cijeli je radni vijek proveo kao novinar, pa se u pripovijedanju zrcali efikasnost njegova publicističkog izraza, no taj je izraz ovdje ipak u službi emotivnoga književnoga djela. Čitatelji Runovićani uživat će u prepoznavanju mnogih detalja iz vlastitih životnih priča ili priča svojih predaka, dok se svima nama ostalima pruža divna prigoda da nas Milan Puljiz, u ulozi osobnog vodiča, provede kroz svoj dio imotske krajine i njezine burne povijesti.
