Iza karte nije zemlja za kojom se čezne, rijeka, planina, more, nego predodžba o njima, maštovitija od same stvarnosti. U toj zrcalnoj igri, Michel Houellebecq pojavljuje se u dvostrukom svojstvu autora romana i književnog lika koji piše predgovor katalogu likovnog djela te bitno utječe na sva romaneskna zbivanja. Oko ta dva lika autor će konstruirati roman savršeno fluidne arhitekture s nosivim elementima slike svijeta u kojoj caruju novac, vulgarnost i medijsko-manipulativne igre, pretresati većinom vladajuće slojeve suvremenog društva. Umjetnost, ljubav, novac, odnos prema ocu, smrt, posao, roba, neke su od tema ovog romana koji je Houellebecqu donio uspjeh i konačno najveću francusku književnu nagradu "Goncourt" koja mu je već u više navrata izmicala iz ruke.
