Deset žena, deset neuroza što se hrane i tješe jedna drugom, deset sudbina o kojima čitamo navodne izvještaje, deset prijateljica po kojima se zovu poglavlja (Cristina, Ludovica, Stefania, Amélie, Francesca, Emanuela, Renata, Margherita, Fabrizia, Emilia), sve su zrelih godina, osim šesnaestogodišnje kćeri jedne od njih, svaka je egzistencijalno osigurana i ima naizgled normalnu vezu - no svaka skriva nešto apsurdno i hipokrizijsko što ju čini posebnom. Tek jedna od njih je odista tragična figura - počinja samoubojstvo, a ostale su "tragične" tek zbog banalnosti svoje zarobljenosti svakodnevicom u kojoj već samo "ostajanje na površini" od njih zahtijeva maksimum napora. Njihove su "tragedije" portretirane kao farsične i smiješne, svojim se "heroinama" autorica s ljubavlju, ironijom i nevinom perfidijom nježno ruga.
