Istočni Berlin, sedamdesete. Pod utjecajem događaja iz svoje mladosti, kad je svjedočio slomu Revolucije 1956. i samoubojstvu svog oca, državnog tužitelja, mladi Mađar pokušava se dokazati kao pisac. Dane provodi na kazališnim probama kako bi bio što bliže slavnoj glumici Thei. No oboje je ustvari opčinjeno tajanstvenim Melchiorom, kojem je glavni cilj bijeg preko Zida. Unatoč burnom životu mladić uspijeva pisati roman o njemačkom estetu s početka stoljeća. Rukopis završi kod nekoga komu nipošto nije bio namijenjen, a koji cijelu priču privodi kraju na svoj način. Prvi put objavljena u Mađarskoj 1986. nakon višegodišnje bitke s cenzorima, Knjiga sjećanja Pétera Nádasa moderni je klasik koji kritičari uspoređuju s djelima Marcela Prousta, Thomasa Manna i Jamesa Joycea. Zahvaljujući maestralnom prikazu života iza željezne zavjese, s čime se pretapa vješto umetnut roman u romanu, Knjiga sjećanja prevedena je na desetak glavnih svjetskih jezika te je zauzela mjesto među najvažnijim djelima europske književnosti 20. stoljeća.
