Prije četiri godine u Zagrebu je, u izdanju Matice hrvatske, objavljen izbor tekstova Renate Lachmann, pod naslovom Phantasia - Memoria - Rhetorica. Priređujući taj izbor sugerirao sam da su u naslovu spomenute kategorije središnji elementi njezinoga iznimno bogatog znanstvenog rada. Činilo mi se tada da sam, ciljajući na komparatističke i teorijske priloge, uspio ocrtati, bar u naznakama, njegove najznačajnije dijelove i ptužiti konzistentnu sliku jedne uzorite djelatnosti. No kao i svi izbori, pokazalo se, i ovaj je bio, bar djelimice, manjkav. Renate se Lachmann, ako ne i sustavno ali ono ipak sporadično, uvijek iznova vraćala jugoslavenskim književnostima, s kojima je zapravo i započela svoju znanstvenu karijeru (usp. Lachmann-Schmohl 1964) i pridavala im u svojemu obimnome slavističkom opusu odgovarajuće mjesto. Valja reći da se ona od tog polja djelatnosti nikada nije istinski odmakla, da mu je, i kao nastavnica i kao znanstvenica, uvijek pridavala pažnju i njegovala ga u nekome malom kutku svog raskošnoga vrta. Stoga se kao nužni nastavak te prve knjige nameće jedna druga u kojoj će i taj dio njezina rada, kojega se razumljivo ne može lišiti novijih teorijskih spoznaja, zauzeti središnje mjesto.
