Riječ je, dakako, o tada, za onodobni jugoslavenski znanstveni obzor, revolucionarnoj stilističkoj metodi izgrađenoj na amalgamiranju romanske i njemačke teorije (Leo Spitzer, Giacomo Devoto). Određujući svoju metodološku poziciju, prof. Frangeš je odmah na početku svojeg znanstvenog zanimanja ponudio kritičko prihvaćanje te metode ističući kako je metoda kao i svaka metoda, dobrodošla, ali ona sama sebi ne smije biti cilj nego mora biti u funkciji sinteze za koju je nužna i književna činjenica. To Frangešu nije dopuštalo da se iscrpi u dojmu kao jednom od polazišta stilističke kritike nego ga je napućivalo na uvažavanje povijesno-kulturnog horizonta kao konteksta s jedne strane te stilsko paradigmatske, poetičke književne činjenice s druge strane. Frangešov način pisanja nije suho akademski ili pak opterećen znanstvenim metajezikom iako je pozitivistički precizan i stilski lociran nego vazda na lijep način govori o proizvodima ljepote. Otud zavodljivost i romaneksnost njegove povijesti svojstvena samo njemu, poznata kao frangešovski stil. Cvjetko Milanja
