Ova polemika, koja je prva važna studija o veličini pučanstva i njezine goleme važnosti za značaj i osobitost društva, bavi se sklonošću ljudske rase da nadmaši svoje prirodne resurse. Presudno za nastanak sektora demografije, ovo djelo i danas je od središnje važnosti za shvaćanje suvremenih problema u vezi s proizvodnjom i raspodjelom hrane. Anglikanski svećenik Thomas Robert Malthus napisao je svoj slavni esej 1798. kao odgovor na razmišljanja o mogućnosti usavršavanja društva, koja su bila potaknuta Francuskom revolucijom. Budući da ljudska sposobnost razmnožavanja u tolikoj mjeri nadmašuje proizvodnju hrane, objašnjavao je Malthus, pučanstvo će uvijek nadmašivati raspoložive resurse i mnogi ljudi neizbježno će mukotrpno životariti na rubu opstanka. Malthusov jednostavni, ali snažni, argument - koji pokazuje da se oskudica i nejednakost javljaju čak i u društvu iz kojega su uklonjeni svi nepravedni zakoni i institucije - bio je krajnje sporan u njegovo vrijeme. Mnogi Malthusovi suvremenici prezirali su ga, jer im je srušio nade u socijalni napredak, a sumorna logika njegova "populacijskog načela" navela je Thomasa Carlylea da ekonomiju nazove "zlogukom znanošću".
