Knjiga je posvećena obitelji kao osnovnoj društvenoj skupini odgovornoj za stvaranje novog života, njegov rast i razvoj, socijalizaciju i individualizaciju. Ona donosi ključne teorije nastanka i razvoja obitelji kroz povijest i brojne druge, usmjerene specifičnim aspektima funkcioniranja porodice, terminologiju, klasifikacije obitelji prema ključnim kriterijima, podjelu prema strukturi i odnosima, razradu obiteljske patologije i putove njezina prevladavanja u okviru psihosocijalnog rada. Tu su i ekološki, odnosni, intra i intergeneracijski aspekti obiteljskih interakcija, zadovoljavanje obiteljskih potreba, način provođenja slobodnog vremena, kao i duhovni aspekti obiteljskog života. U tom kontekstu je i predstavljanje strategije problem solving procesa i njegove primjene u radu na problemima i sociopatološkim pojavama povezanim u etiološkom, funkcionalnom i/ili terapijskom pogledu s obiteljima. Nadalje, ponuđen je i niz empirijskih istraživanja stranih i domaćih autora, kao i autora ove knjige i njegovih suradnika u kontekstu prikaza ili prorade pojedinih aspekata razvoja, djelovanja ili regresivnih procesa obiteljskog sustava u svrhu boljeg njihovog razumijevanja i daljnjeg istraživanja.
