U knjizi jednog od vodećih svjetskih filozofa i društvenih teoretičara, autora knjige Homo sacer koja već niz godina predstavlja najveći izazov interpretacija humanističkih i društvenih znanstvenika u Europi i svijetu, Agamben istražuje status "golog života" u specifičnoj perspektivi. Riječ je o svjedočenju o traumatskom događaju u povijesti AUSCHWITZ. Njegova je specifičnost u tome da rasčovječuje čovjeka, iste osuđuje na šutnju godinama nakon događaja eksterminacije i genocida. Za Agambena se pitanje svjedočenja postavlja tek njegovom nemogućnošću, odnosno svjedočenje postaje etičko-politički problem kad u ulozi svjedoka traumatskog događaja nastupa tako reći sam "goli život". U knjizi je autor provokativno, argumentacijski dosljedno i insipirativno pokazao sve poteškoće tumačenja fenomena Holokausta, totalitarizma i prebolijevanja prošlosti u teorijskim raspravama Hannah Arendt, Raymonda Arona, Prima Levyja i mnogih drugih. Riječ je o snažnoj i vjerodostojnoj, suvremenoj interpretaciji problema patnje i sjećanja, obveze svjedočenja i načina prebolijevanja trauma prošlosti.
