Ujević je često posezao za perom da ispovijedi i neposredno ono što je, na svoj način i do stanovite mjere, posredno izražavao ili dokazivao pjesmama, pa je tako ostavio i niz fragmentarno formuliranih postulata na kojima je zasnivao svoju poetiku. Ja tu poetiku nazivani OTVORENOM, zato što je ona to bila u najdoslovnijem smislu, a najviše, dakako, u detaljima izraza podešenim prema iskustvima različitih, starijih i modernih poetika, u velikom vremenskom i sadržajnom rasponu od trubadura i simbolista preko vitalističkog ekspresionizma i futu-rizma do korozivnog nadrealizma. Ujević je bio antidogmatičan, dakle otvoren, asimilatorski raspoložen, u nekim stvarima gotovo eklektički svezainteresiran. To je vjerojatno pravi razlog što je znao ponekad teoretski proturječiti samome sebi kao pjesniku, ili obratno; i što je nerijetko isticao da istodobno, dok se još zalaže za jednu istinu, u njegovu duhu već niče dijalektički korektiv te istine u obliku negacije, koju bi on afirmirao jednako žarko kao i njezin negativni poticaj.
