Mađarski pisac I. Békeffi napisao je veliki broj komada za kazalište i film, ali je postao popularan upravo po ovoj knjizi za djecu. Riječ je o svojevrsnoj suvremenoj bajci, a radnja se zbiva u Americi među talijanskim doseljenicima. Priča je to o čovjeku s pasjom dušom i o psu plemenite, ljudske duše - a sve je to ista osoba jer je riječ o preobrazbi čovjeka u psa i ponovno u čovjeka. Ova neobična knjiga, na granici realnosti i fantastičnog svijeta, zaokuplja nas ponajprije toplinom pripovijedanja i zalaganja za humanost, za ljubav među ljudima i ljubav prema životinjama. Békeffi rođen je 1901. godine u Segedinu. Završio je studij filozofije u Budimpešti. Pisao je za kazalište i film. I ovaj roman za mladež stekao je popularnost u Mađarskoj preko kazališnih dasaka i televizije. Poznato budimpeštansko kazalište izvelo ga je kao mjuzikl. Békeffi je živio u Švicarskoj i Njemačkoj. Umro je u Mađarskoj 1977.
