About the Book

Vjenceslav Novak (Senj, 1859. – Zagreb, 1905.) jedan je od najznačajnijih predstavnika hrvatskoga realizma, a zbog objektivnog pripovijedanja i pristupa građi prozvali su ga hrvatskim Balzacom. Novak je svoju književnu karijeru započeo s hajdučko-turskom novelistikom koja je u sebi sadržavala izrazita romantičarska obilježja. Nakon toga pisao je zavičajne novele iz podgorskog i senjskog života koje su bile realistički oblikovane, a u pripovijetkama Iz velegradskog podzemlja (1905.) i U glib (1901.) opisao je svijet obespravljenih i siromašnih. Posljednji Stipančići, roman o propadanju senjskih patricija u prvoj polovici 19. stoljeća, smatra se najboljim romanom hrvatskoga realizma. Drama obitelji Stipančić ima svoj društveno-gospodarski i politički okvir. Ona je jedna u nizu sličnih na prostorima naših primorskih gradova gdje propadaju stare plemićke obitelji a uzdižu se nove, građanske, koje se bolje prilagođavaju novim društvenim prilikama.
