Nakon što ga je tijekom diplomatske karijere napustila supruga, Claes Thune otvara odvjetnički ured, u kojem zapošljava šutljivu tajnicu Matildu Wiik, a slobodno vrijeme provodi s prijateljima iz mladih dana okupljenima u Klubu sredaša. Helsinki 1938. još je uvijek ugodno mjesto za život, a rane iz kratkoga ali krvavoga građanskog rata 1918. naizgled su zacijeljele. Ipak, prve naznake antisemitizma polako remete naizgled idiličnu sliku glavnoga finskoga grada, a i nagrizaju odnose u Thuneovoj obitelji te među sredašima. Gospođa Wiik istodobno vodi borbu sa svojom traumatičnom prošlošću, a Thune ne može ni naslutiti kakvu će lavinu pokrenuti slučajni susret u njegovu uredu. Prema mišljenju kritike jedan od najboljih skandinavskih romanopisaca, Kjell Westö proslavio se ciklusom od pet epskih romana koji se odvijaju u Helsinkiju tijekom 20. stoljeća. Njegov roman Privid 1938., koji se isprva čini kao interesantni prikaz Helsinkija u međuraću, ubrzo se pretvara u vrhunsko napeto štivo u kojem se sudbine likova isprepleću na neočekivane načine. Napisan u najboljoj maniri skandinavskih trilera, Privid 1938. čitatelj teško može ispustiti iz ruku.
