Tekstovi koje je u ovoj knjizi skupio i preveo Božidar Zec spadaju, uz knjige, u sam vrh Freudovog stvaralaštva. „S one strane principa zadovoljstva“ je remek djelo koje, u suglasnosti sa čitavim Freudovim učenjem, pokazuje da svijest nije najopćenitije svojstvo psihičkih procesa, već da je samo njiihova posebna funkcija. Utoliko su mjesto i uloga pamćenja sasvim drukčiji nego kod učenja koja svijesti poklanjaju centralnu ulogu u našem psihičkom životu. „Ego i Id“ je klasičan tekst u kojem Freud možda i najpreciznije razlikuje svjesno, predsvjesno i nesvjesno. „Psihologija mase i analiza ega“ bavi se mehanizmima stvaranja i funkcioniranja mase, kao i utjecajem mase na pojedinačno ja. U tekstu „Budućnost jedne iluzije“ Freud ispituje religijske predstave i njihov učinak na psihički život. Ista tema je u središtu slavnog teksta „Mojsije i monoteizam“, s tim što je, sada, pažnja više usmjerena na čitav niz kulturnih uvjetovanosti koje su dovodile do razarajuće mržnje prema Židovima.
