Glavni junak, Kristijan, rođen je u selu Oklaju kod Drniša. Njegov otac, Viktor Malina, napustio je obitelj prije nego se on rodio i otišao u Njemačku. Vratio se samo jednom da bi zatražio rastavu braka kako bi se u Njemačkoj mogao bogato oženiti. Da bi je što lakše dobio, na sudu je optužio Martu zbog preljuba i odbio priznati da je Kristijan njegov sin. Tako je Marta sama podizala dijete radeći najteže fizičke poslove i tajeći od sina tko mu je otac. Poslije četrdeset godina Viktor se vraća kao bogati povratnik, zasnovavši u samostalnoj Hrvatskoj poslovno carstvo. U međuvremenu se Marta razboljela i može joj pomoći samo operacija u inozemstvu. Da bi pomogao majci, Kristijan iznudi od nje ime svojega oca i ode bez majčina znanja k njemu tražiti pomoć. No Viktor ga grubo odbije i izbaci iz kuće. Kad je Marta umrla, Kristijan se nad njezinim grobom zakune da će se osvetiti. Prateći Kristijanov osvetnički pohod, Ivo Brešan dao je živu sliku hrvatske tranzicijske stvarnosti: urušavanja moralnog sustava i nastajanja predatorskoga kapitalizma balkanskog tipa. Oštra društvena kritičnost, zanimljivo profiliranje karaktera te vješto vođenje radnje, glavne su odlike ovoga romana.
