Kako bi što sustavnije sagledao problematiku obuhvaćenu prisutnošću “slikovne paradigme” unutar književnih tekstova, Krešimir Purgar naglašava važnost discipline vizualnih studija koju gene-ralno smatra pogodnim teorijskim modelom za pristup ikoničkim aspektima suvremene literature. U čitavome prvom dijelu knjige nastoji se objasniti zašto je radikalna interdisciplinarnost nužna u suvremenoj humanističkoj teoriji i zašto je slika postala središnjim mjestom mišljenja danas, dok se u drugom dijelu, na primjerima konkretnih književnih tekstova, metoda vizualnih studija primjenjuje u analizi romana i pripovijetki suvremene talijanske i američke književnosti. Autorova namjera bila je odrediti područje utjecaja slikovnog na tekstualno, kao i razmotriti senzibilitet suvremenog čitatelja prema vizualnim impulsima koje emanira literarni tekst. Obrađeno je devet romana i jedna zbirka kratkih priča: Ja se ne bojim Niccolòa Ammanitija, City i Ocean More Alessandra Baricca, Americana i Point Omega Dona DeLilla, Modrobradi Kurta Vonneguta, Otok prethodnog dana Umberta Eca, Fiona Maura Covacicha, Superwoobinda Alda Novea i Američki psiho Breta Eastona Ellisa.
