Ovo izdanje donosi tri eseja Friedricha Nietzschea u kojima se prati Nietzscheov put od obožavanja do neuvijenog obračuna s opernim umjetnikom Richardom Wagnerom. U ranijem razdoblju njegova intelektualnog razvoja revolucionarni umjetnik opere Richard Wagner bio je ključni objekt Nietzscheova divljenja: Nietzsche ga je osobno upoznao 1868. i potom postao članom najužeg kruga njegovih poštovatelja. Kulminaciju i u nekoj mjeri analitičku razradu pohvala Wagnerovu djelu i pojavi nalazimo u Nietzscheovu spisu Wagner u Bayreuthu objavljenom 1876. u sklopu njegove knjige pod naslovom Nesuvremena razmatranja. Tu se uglavnom nižu uistinu neobuzdane pohvale Wagnerovu neprispodobivu geniju. U knjižici Slučaj Wagner, duhovitom, zajedljivom i vedrom djelcu, nalazimo završne Nietzscheove misli o Wagneru, svojevrsno konačno svođenje računa. Mnogo je toga nabijeno u njemu, čak i poluozbiljna pretpostavka da Wagner po svoj prilici nije Nijemac, nego prije Židov. U posljednjoj godini svoga lucidnog života (1888) Nietzsche je, uz ostalo, sastavio još jednu knjigu o Wagneru, pod neobičnim autoreferencijalnim naslovom Nietzsche contra Wagner: spisi jednog psihologa. Objavljena je sljedeće godine, nakon autorova mentalnog sloma. U toj su tematskoj autoantologiji sabrani ulomci, donekle revidirani, iz različitih ranijih radova. Svrha je te knjige bila da pokaže kako Nietzscheova duhovna rezerva prema Wagneru seže godinama unatrag, barem do Bayreutha 1876.
