Tijelo bez kosti jedinstvena je studija u domaćoj humanistici. Složeni procesi uspostave hrvatskog nacionalnog identiteta njome se zahvaćaju u samim izvorištima. Slijedeći brojne analize najutjecajnijih teoretičara nacije - E. Gellnera, B. Andersona, E. J. Hobsbawma, A. D. Smitha, H. K. Bhabhe, P. Chatterjee, E. Balibara i drugih - autorica rastvara mehanizme i strategije kojima su istaknuti prvaci Hrvatskoga narodnog preporoda zamislili i proizveli platformu za djelotvorno oblikovanje hrvatske nacionalne ideje. Književnim, programatskim, publicističkim, jezikoslovnim, pseudoteorijskim i drugim tipovima tekstova, preporoditelji su doslovno stavili u pogon zamašnjak nacionalne identifikacije. Odjednom je diskontinuitet etnološke prošlosti preveden u povijesni kontinuitet nacije, nedohvatljiva punina etnotradicije u neupitno nacionalno ishodište, jezična raznorodnost u potvrdu identitetske homogenosti, a kulturna diferencijacija u snažnu legitimaciju nacionalne autentičnosti. U tom smislu knjiga pokazuje kako su preporodna književnost i kultura na paradoksalan način izmislile i uspostavile hrvatski narod istodobno ga prikazujući kao već postojeći, samorazumljiv i nepromijenjen entitet. Tako se raznorodnim reprezentacijskim postupcima i uime cijele zamišljene zajednice, zametnuta kao tijelo bez kosti, u procijepu žuđene historijske autohtonosti i nepremostivih zjevova narativizirane prošlosti, ozbiljuje hrvatska nacija.
