Vrijeme što ostaje svojevrsno je čitanje jednog od najutjecajnijih tekstova kršćanstva,Poslanice Rimljanima apostola Pavla iz 58. godine. Talijanski filozof Giorgio Agamben s filološkom preciznošću kontekstualizira tekst u svjetlu vremena nastanka, kad kršćanstvo i judaizam još nisu posve odvojeni. Agamben odvaja Pavlov tekst od njegove kanonizacije tijekom crkvene povijesti, zastupajući stajalište da Poslanica Rimljanima nije bila namijenjena konstituiranju nove crkve, nego prije "mesijanskoj" suspenziji židovskog zakona. Autorovo istraživanje mesijanizma vodi drugoj središnjoj referenciji ove knjige, Walteru Benjaminu. Agamben iz čitanja Poslanice Rimljanima i Benjaminovih Teza o filozofiji povijesti izvlači niz dosad neslućenih usporednica u kojima se Benjaminova filozofija povijesti prikazuje u svjetlu ponavljanja i prisvajanja Pavlova koncepta vremena što ostaje. Knjiga Vrijeme što ostaje dopunja Agambenov magnum opus pod naslovom "Homo sacer", iz kojega su na hrvatskom objavljena djela Homo sacer: suverena moć i goli život(Multimedijalni institut, Zagreb 2006) Ono što ostaje od Auschwitza (Izdanja Antibarbarus, Zagreb 2008) i Izvanredno stanje (Deltakont, Zagreb 2008).
