Široki hodnik u sredini E-bloka kaznionice Cold Mountain prekriven je linoleumom boje starih, iscijeđenih limeta, pa je Zelena milja ono što se u drugim zatvorima zove Posljednjom miljom. Pruža se šezdesetak dobrih koraka od juga prema sjeveru, od početka do dna. U dnu je kaznena komora sa Starom Munjarom, električnim stolcem, posljednjim prebivalištem stanovnika E-bloka. Život zatvorskih čuvara stubokom se promijeni kad im u listopadu 1932. stigne novi stanovnik, gorostasan zatvorenik John Coffey, osuđen za zvjersko ubojstvo dviju djevojčica. Pronađen je s mrtvim djevojčicama u krilu. I još gore, njegova je izjava pri uhićenju zvučala kao priznanje krivnje. No ništa s tim Johnom Coffeyjem nije kao što se čini na prvi pogled. Taj okrutni ubojica tužnih očiju boji se mraka i često plače, reklo bi se, taj je gorostas enigma obavijena misterijem. Što god da John Coffey jest – zli ubojica ili naivna dobričina – moraju mu se priznati neobične sposobnosti iscjeljenja. Požrtvovno i puna srca spašava druge. Može li itko spasiti njega?
