Kiš, Pekić i Tišma potekli su iz suštinski iste generacije. To je generacija koja se javila u međuvremenu, licem više prema kalvariji Drugog svetskog rata koja će ih temeljno obeležiti nego prema Prvom svetskom ratu koji će se ucepiti u svest njihovih očeva, pretvarajući svet njihovog iskustva u „jučerašnji svet“, jedan od nekoliko „jučerašnjih svetova“ XX veka. „Eseji u ovoj knjizi nastajali su dugo. Prvi od njih napisan je pre bombardovanja Srbije 1999. Poslednji među njima napisani su u vreme oblikovanja novog Hladnog rata. Istorija je prepuna ratova. Kiš, Pekić i Tišma pisali su o nekim od tih ratova. Njihovo razumevanje istorije nije smanjilo udeo ljudskog nasilja u istoriji i stvarnosti, ali je svakako učinilo da se istorija dublje spozna i da se lakše podnese kada postane svakodnevica. Čitajući Kiša, Pekića i Tišmu, ja sam učio, uživao i menjao se. Ništa više i ništa bolje od književnosti se ne može dobiti. Ništa manje od književnosti ne treba ni zahtevati“, rekao je Božović o knjizi.
