Na uskom prostoru Bosfora i Dardanela sudarile su se tadašnja najmoćnija vojna sila Engleska, udružena s drugim silama Antante, i jedna iscrpljena, siromašna, urušavajuća zemlja, kakva je bila Osmanska carevina. U evropskim udžbenicima iz historije to je čuvena Bitka na Galipolju, o kojoj su napisane desetine knjiga, čak su snimljeni i igrani filmovi, ali koja je, opet, ostala nedovoljno istraženom i objašnjenom. Te godine, 1915., zapadni svijet je ustao ostvariti svoj višestoljetni, frustrirajući san: trebalo je anadolskog tigra baciti na koljena te tako ostvariti osvetu sakupljanu u njedrima Evropljana. Cijenu svoga opstanka turski narod morao je platiti s 253.000 poginulih. Ali, da nije bilo takvog otpora, današnji bi svijet, mnogo drukčije izgledao. Među žrtvama bilo je dosta i Bošnjaka, kako onih porijeklom iz Bosne, Hercegovine i iz Sandžaka. U romanu, punom žestokih epskih sudbina i lirskih detalja, pisac briljantno uspijeva povezati žive historijske činjenice, narodsku memoriju te nesvakidašnju magiju svoga pripovjedačkoga umijeća. Zato je Čanakkale danas jedan od najčitanijih i najprevođenijih romana moderne turske književnosti.
