U posljednjim danima Drugog svjetskog rata samo je mali broj ljudi znao da su Japanci isprobali posljednje, očajničko oružje. Dvije podmornice poslane su na Zapadnu obalu Sjedinjenih Država noseći revolucionarnu novu vrstu biološkog virusa. Imale su misiju da stvore pakao. Niti jedna podmornica nije stigla do svojeg cilja. Ali to ne znači da su izgubljene. Netko zna za podmornice i za ono što su nosile, zna gdje se možda nalaze i ima na umu plan da se domogne njihovog tereta - plan koji bi mogao preoblikovati Ameriku i svijet kakav poznajemo. Sve što mu stoji na putu su troje ljudi: pomorska biologinja Summer, pomorski inžinjer Dirk i njihov otac, Dirk Pitt, novi šef Nacionalne agencije za mora i podmorje. Pitt se i prije suočavao s opasnim neprijateljima, čak je i surađivao sa svojom djecom da ih ulovi. Ali sve do sada, nikada se nije susreo s tolikom koncentracijom zla.
