Proljeće je 1969. godine i Lakshmi, koja je sada u braku s dr. Kumarom, ravnateljica je Ljekovitog vrta ledi Bradley u Simli. Maliku je pak dvadeset godina, završio je školu te se upustio u vezu s mladom djevojkom Nimmi. Na Lakshminu inicijativu Malik odlazi u Jaipur raditi na projektu otvorenja kina Kraljevski dragulj. Malik ubrzo spoznaje da se u Ružičastom Gradu njegova djetinjstva nije puno toga promijenilo. Moć i novac i dalje tečno kolaju među pripadnicima imućnijih klasa, a Kraljevska palača u Jaipuru i dalje je vrelo tajnovitih priča. No kada otvorenje kina zasjeni tragedija, Malik počinje sumnjati da se u poleđini toga stravičnog događaja krije nešto puno mračnije te odvažno pokušava otkriti istinu. Nekoć dijete ulice, Malik je iznimno snalažljiv i vičan u rasplitanju zamršene mreže tajni čije su niti razvučene ulicama Jaipura. Ovaj nastavak uspješnice Žena koja je slikala kanom vješto je i bogato izvezena narativna tapiserija u kojoj se isprepliću priče iz Lakshmina i Malikova života. Priča je to čiji intenzitet boja, mirisa, okusa i prikrivenih tajni očarava u cijelosti.
