Nova knjiga akademika Nenada Cambija posvećena je jednom od najkontroverznijih problema u proučavanju rimske carske portretistike – rekonstrukciji izgleda utemeljitelja tetrarhije i našeg “zemljaka”, cara Dioklecijana, te slijedom toga atribuciji u kamenoj plastici preživjelih portreta. Knjizi je prethodilo višedecenijsko proučavanje careve rezidencije u Splitu, fenomena rimskog portreta, kao i vrela koja donose vrijedne informacije o sustavu tetrarhije i uopće događajima onoga vremena. Ova sinteza je rezultat dugoga promišljanja i proučavanja, stavljena na papir u zenitu stvaralačkog napona. Autor naglašava važnost istraživanja carskog portreta, napose problem prepoznavanja individualnih portretnih crta tetrarhijskih vladara. Zbog političkih promjena koje su zadesile rimsko društvo tijekom III. st. dogodile su se i bitne promjene u carskoj propagandi koje su uvjetovale i nove načine realizacije i kontekstualizacije portreta. Rezultate istraživanja individualne Dioklecijanove fizionomije s novčanih kovova Cambi uspoređuje s preživjelim portretima u kamenoj plastici, te najveću pažnju pridaje glavi iz Joanneuma u Grazu. Posebno ga je zanimala jer je prema novim podatcima podrijetlom iz Salone. Uz integralni prijevod teksta na engleski jezik knjiga je opremljena brojnim fotografijama u boji.
