Živi s majkom Maeve, plahom ženom koja dane provodi u krevetu, tvrdeći da ne zna tko je Debbien otac, i koja vjeruje da su njeni snovi proročanstva. Malenu obitelj zaokružuje Maevin brat Billy, koji živi u prikolici iza kuće, previše pije i na internetu rado oponaša slavne mrtve pisce. Premda svi imaju svojih hirova, ljubav koju članovi obitelji White osjećaju jedni prema drugima neporeciva je. Ali Debbien se život mijenja. Upisavši Trinity College u Dublinu, nekoliko dana u tjednu putuje na predavanja. Izvan sigurnog mjehurića svog djetinjstva, Debbie se prvi put osjeća uzbuđeno ali i razočarano kolegama s fakulteta i anonimnošću gradskog života. Premda poznato okruženje farme nudi utjehu, Debbie se svejedno sve više od nje udaljava. A kad počne razmišljati o mogućnostima koje donosi budućnost, pojava neobičnih snova probudit će njezin strah da je čeka Maevina sudbina. Potom tragična nesreća poremeti mir u obitelji, a Debbie otkrije da svoje iduće korake možda više neće moći birati sama.
