Analitička je filozofija u dvadesetom stoljeću za sobom povukla čitav niz pitanja o temeljnim problemima filozofije. Najistaknutije pritom jest područje jezika. S obzirom na svakodnevni jezik, moralno-etička pitanja doživjela su svoju preobrazbu odnosno zaokret: od klasične etike i pitanja utemeljenja etičkih koncepcija pogled je filozofa, poglavito anglosaksonske proivijencije, skrenut na jezik morala. Najistaknutiji je primjer zaokreta Humeov zahtjev radikalnog odvajanja činjenice od vrijednosti, odnosno od biti do trebati. Autor u knjizi predstavlja zanimljivu diskusiju između J. R. Sealrea, na jednoj, te R. M. Harea i J.L. Mackieja na druguj strani. Searle ja naime na primjeru jednog ilokucijskog govornog čina obećanja pokazao da je moguće logički dosljedno učiniti premošćenje „ponora“, tj. iz biti rečenica derivirati treba-rečenice, dok spomenuta druga dvojica to radikalno osporavaju. Autor se u načelu priklanja Searlovim argumentima, no i oni su, valja priznati, podložni kritici.
