Šimun Nikolić, nezaposleni profesor hrvatskoga jezika, razočaran u hrvatsko pravosuđe i ekonomiju, odluči otići raditi u München kao bauštelac, ne bi li prikupio novac za ponovno pokretanje sudskog spora povodom prometne nesreće u kojoj su mu stradali žena i dijete. Smjestit će ga našijenci u zgradu, kafkijanski limb, gdje žive došljaci svih nacija, živu vrevu jezika i nevolja, a uskoro će zaredati i ubojstva i Šimun će se naći usred kriminalističke istrage u kojoj su svi stanovnici hotela sumnjivi, što pojačava njihove strahove koje nose sa sobom iz zavičaja. Domovina to go Roberta Međurečana je dijelom i epistolarni roman, jer Šimun piše pisma nerođenoj kćeri, a pri rekonstrukciji stare zgrade nalazi pisma koja je 1930-ih Jakob pisao zaručnici Izabeli, koja pak uznemirujuće podsjećaju na suvremenu političku radikalizaciju. Tako uz fabulu koja primora čitatelja da, baš kao i Šimun, drži oči širom otvorene, autor predstavlja galeriju likova i trauma, preispituje europski identitet, multikulturalno društvo, bolan i neizvjestan proces melting pota, pripovijeda o klicama terorizma i pribojava se rata u Europi. Koji je u međuvremenu počeo.
