Ovo je priča o drugoj strani braka i sklapanja braka, o svemu onome što je rušilo ustaljene norme i brak činilo faktorom društvene (ne)stabilnosti u istarskom društvu početkom 17. stoljeća. Brak je mogao biti sklopljen nasilno ili dogovorno. Djevojke su mogle biti otimane ili su bježale od roditelja i rođaka sa svojim izabranikom. Ponekad je prije sklapanja braka trebalo proći čitavu proceduru da se dobije dozvola za sklapanje braka jer su mladenci bili u srodstvu ili su imali neku drugu obvezu ili zapreku.To je priča i o nasilju u braku te njegovu raskidu i kraju, koji se mogao očitovati u rastavi braka od stola i postelje ili kao poništenje braka. Osim o braku, knjiga govori i o izvanbračnim, konkubinatskim vezama i njihovom prihvaćanju odnosno neprihvaćanju prije četiri stoljeća u Istri.
