Recepcija memoarskog zapisa Dunav, u godini prvog objavljivanja 1983. (tri godine prije Dunava Claudia Magrisa) iznenadila je i samog autora. O Dunavu nisu čitali samo stanovnici njegova rodnog grada. Hvalili su ga i oni koji o Dunavu nisu ništa znali, ali su ga zavoljeli kroz Pavličićevo pisanje o rijeci uz koju se smjestio i Vukovar. Pavličićevu pismu divili su se i oni kritičari koji do tada o njemu nisu pisali. Danas nam se može činiti kako je Pavličić osjetio, ili pogodio, pravi trenutak kazivanja o Dunavu. Devet godina poslije (1992.) Dunavu je pridružen dodatak pod naslovom P. S. Sedam vukovarskih razglednica. U Razglednicama se pripovjedač pozicionira u središte zapisa i više nije samo zaljubljeni promatrač. Kako Vukovarci stoje sa sjećanjima, na koji način vukovarske rijeke postaju metafora grada, samo su neke od tema koje je Pavličić tada postavio. Tekstom je ponudio i rješenje, i utjehu; upravo ono što je Vukovarcima u tom trenutku, ali i u godinama i desetljećima kasnije, bilo najviše potrebno. Zapisano će preživjeti nekorektne povijesne interpretacije i sačuvati grad za one koji su na njega, poznavajući ga, zadržali pravo.
