Listopad je 1923. Građanski rat u Rusiji tek je završio i sa sobom donio siromaštvo, glad i bolesti. Na ulicama Kazanja vlada kaos, stotine se beskućnika slijevaju u grad tražeći spas. Djeca su najviše pogođena, stoga su vlasti odlučile dio njih evakuirati iz Kazanja u topliji i hranom opskrbljen Samarkand. Na čelu ešalona najspremniji je čovjek za taj zadatak: ratni veteran Dejev. On će zajedno s komesarkom Bijelom učiniti sve da pet stotina mališana dovede sigurno do cilja. Međutim, ispostavit će se da je put pred njima nemilosrdna, lavovska bitka za svaki zalogaj hrane, za svaki gutljaj vode - za baš svaki život. Hoće li Dejev i Bijela, ta dva potpuno različita karaktera, uspjeti? Treći roman nagrađivane ruske autorice Guzel Jahine veličanstveno je djelo, kojim nas ponovno vodi u Rusiju s početka 20. stoljeća. Jahina je njime još jednom potvrdila svoju pripovjedačku izvrsnost i umijeće suočavanja s velikim temama.
