Nada je preduvjet za život vrijedan življenja – u životu ispunjenom kušnjama, nada je ono što čovjeka može usmjeriti i motivirati ga da ih nadiđe. Nada nam je danas potrebnija nego ikada. Recentna zbivanja u Europi ponukala su autora na promišljanje filozofskih aspekata nade kao fenomena koji svakom pojedincu nosi različita značenja i vrijednosti. Nekima ona znači pasivnost, odustajanje od vjerovanja da čovjek može nešto promijeniti te prepuštanje uvjerenju da će se izvanjske sile pobrinuti da dobije što želi. Za druge je pak nada aktivna i povezana s djelovanjem na ostvarenju mogućnosti, jer budućnost nije predodređena. Nada može biti oboje. Svendsen nadu smatra neizbježnom u normalnom ljudskom životu, no je li ona blagoslov ili prokletstvo, nije sasvim jasno. U Filozofiji nade autor nas na pronicljiv i duhovit način vodi na putovanje kroz povijest filozofije i analizira što su najistaknutiji mislioci napisali o nadi, potvrđujući tako status jednog od najvažnijih filozofa današnjice.
