Učbenik Fonetika 1 obravnava osnove fonetike slovenskega knjižnega oz. standardnega jezika kot celovito dejavnost. Avtorja, izr. prof. dr. Hotimir Tivadar in Urban Batista, sta teoretičnim osnovam dodala predvsem vaje za utrjevanje izgovora, zato je učbenik hkrati lahko tudi komunikacijski priročnik z osnovnimi informacijami o izgovoru. Učno gradivo je nastalo na podlagi izkušenj poučevanja študentov slovenščine kot prvega jezika na Univerzi v Ljubljani in študentov slovenščine kot drugega ali tujega jezika, ki se slovenščino učijo v okviru lektoratov in študija slovenistike v tujini ter tečajev, ki jih organizira Center za slovenščino kot drugi in tuji jezik. Teoretični del učbenika obsega poglavji Zapis črk in izgovor fonemov in Teoretične osnove slovenske fonetike, sledi mu obsežnejši del s Konverzacijskimi vajami za utrjevanje izgovora, kjer so naloge razporejene tematsko in omogočajo individualno delo ali delo v paru. Ob nalogah so tudi posnetki besedil, ki jih lahko študenti poslušajo in skušajo ponoviti besede, stavke in dialoge ter tako izboljšujejo svoj izgovor. Sledijo še pesmi z znanimi napevi in dodatne vaje za izgovor s težjimi nalogami. Na koncu učbenika sta še Zapis govorjenih besedil z rešitvami nalog in kratek Slovensko-angleški terminološki slovar.
