Knjigo sestavljajo trije tematski sklopi. V prvem delu z naslovom »Gledališče kot oblika spektakelske funkcije« se avtorica sprašuje o mestu in pomenu gledališča v družbi. Vprašanje ni preprosto, saj, kot ugotavlja avtorica, pri gledališču umanjkata oba pogoja kapitalistične blagovne produkcije: dobrina (kot blago) in pa trg. Zato gledališče vselej že presega menjalno in tržno logiko kapitalistične proizvodnje. V čem je ta presežek? Pri iskanju odgovora na to vprašanje se avtorica odpravi na teoretsko pot, ki se začenja pri aristotelizmu meščanskega gledališča, nadaljuje preko vplivne Heglove opredelitve dramske umetnine ter obravnave Lessinga in koncepta nacionalnega gledališča, zaključuje pa se s premislekom o avantgardni dvoj(n)ici »estetsko/politično« in s slovenskim primerom »gledališča enega« igralskega prvaka Staneta Severja. Drugi del knjige, »Semiotika in norost«, se posveča kritičnemu premisleku semiotične teorije Julie Kristeve, tretji del, »Dva posega«, pa prinaša dva spisa, sveži in vznemirljivi branji del dveh kanonskih avtorjev: Antona Tomaža Linharta (Ta veseli dan ali Matiček se ženi) in Frana Levstika (Martin Krpan).
