Iz perspektive cjeline autorova kulturnog djelovanja i stručnoga angažmana, književna dionica Grge Gamulina može izgledati torzom. Međutim, i količinom i kakvoćom njegovi literarni spisi zaslužuju naročitu pažnju i opravdano traže da budu vrednovani prema kriterijima stilske izražajnosti i suvremenoga im povijesnog značenja. Događalo se pak često da ostanu neprimijećeni u zaleđu autorova golemog znanstvenog, povijesnoumjetničkog autoriteta, pa čak da ih preskoče i tako specifične panorame poput pregleda hrvatskoga putopisa (štoviše, u knjizi Italija očima Hrvata) ili analize pirandelovske fortune u našoj književnosti. Desetljećima uklanjanja iz javnosti također treba pripisati dio krivnje za nedovoljnu kritičku i interpretativnu valorizaciju. U ovoj knjizi okupljeni korpus predstavlja možda četvrtinu ili petinu Gamulinova uže književnoga bavljenja, a svojim tematskim i problemskim rasponima nastoji ukazati na bogatstvo i razvedenost opusa (na unošenje specifičnih i inovativnih crta u domaći kontekst). Zaključit ćemo s razlogom kako su imanentne lirske, dramatske i narativne silnice piščeva dara ipak našle najprimjereniju sintezu u amfibijskoj disciplini kontemplativnog putopisa i meditativne literarne korespondencije, te kako knjigama poput Ilarijina smiješka ili Voštanih krila Gamulin opravdano zauzima dolično mjesto u hrvatskome proznom sazviježđu druge polovine dvadesetoga stoljeća.
