Jedan od najvećih i najplodnijih teologa 20. st., švicarski teolog Hans Urs von Balthasar, u nizu Teolozi XX. stoljeća iz pera autora koji se njime dugo bavi dobio je zaokruženu studiju koja obuhvaća Balthasarov život i djelo. Možda se ni na jednog teologa 20. st. ne može primijeniti pridjev „katolički“ u etimološkom smislu riječi, kao na Hansa Ursa von Balthasara. Tko god se približi golemoj produkciji švicarskoga teologa, opaža da se u njoj glazba i poezija, književnost i filozofija, teološka i mistična misao, 'pastoralna strast' i kritički sud pomodnosti, obrana i relativiziranje crkvene institucije, stapaju u jedno. Da bi se prodrlo u neodoljivu puninu njegove misli, treba imati hrabrosti, ali to čovjeka ujedno ostavlja zbunjenim: tek što pomisli da ju je dohvatio, ona mu izmiče iz ruku. Biografija i teologija kod njega tvore splet, pretvarajući se u zgusnuti niz potočića koji dolaze iz dalekih neočekivanih izvora. Von Balthasar je bio previše složen - ili cjelovit? - da bismo ga dokučili i zatvorili u unaprijed stvorene sheme; bio je gotovo zrcalo transcendentalne stvarnosti, čiji je oblik želio pojmiti, onaj oblik koji se otkriva jednostavnima, jedinima koji su sposobni dokučiti ljepotu ljubavi u Onomu na kojem više nema ni ljepote ni sjaja. Pisac i teologa Elio Guerriero, urednik teološkoga časopisa Communio priredio je i niz djela Hansa Ursa von Balthasara.
