Devetogodišnja Alice Hart odrasta u domu na osami, između polja šećerne trske i mora, gdje je majčino veličanstveno cvijeće i njegove skrivene poruke štite od očevih mračnih raspoloženja. Nakon tragedije koja će joj zauvijek promijeniti život, Alice odlazi živjeti s bakom, za koju dotad nije ni znala da postoji, na farmu autohtonog australskog cvijeća. Ova farma pruža utočište ženama koje su, poput Alice, izgubljene i slomljene. Prema viktorijanskoj tradiciji, svaki cvijet ima značenje i kako se Alice pomalo privikava na svoj novi život, počinje se služiti jezikom cvijeća da iskaže ono što je teško reći riječima. Kad Alice odraste u mladu ženu, obiteljske tajne i izdaje dovode je do spoznaje da cvijeće ipak ne može ispričati neke priče. Ako želi slobodu za kakvom žudi, Alice će morati skupiti hrabrost da prigrli onu najsnažniju priču - o sebi.
